Retailer L2 wholesale subscriber access - VPLS vs L2TP?

Looking at wholesale documentation for subscriber termination and weighing up the options. Tunneling subscriber traffic using L2TP for LAC/LNS doesn't seem to be the best way forward and am looking for confirmation from others in the community if this is an outdated model of connection?

Does it make sense to deploy L2TP using LAC/LNS instead of doing L2VPN with VPLS? It looks over-complicated to manage in comparison. There is a higher cost associated with tunneling L2 traffic over L2TP tunnels and only PPPoE subscribers are supported. Whereas with L2VPN & VPLS both IPoE and PPPoE subscriber types are supported and there is less overhead in terms of encapsulation

It seems like a straightforward answer but I can't find any clarity online. Hoping there are some here with subscriber management insight that can tell me if I'm missing something!
