Do Users Still Get Routed to Domain Name Provider if Custom Name Servers are used?

Hi Everyone,

I am a new to networking and am deploying an application.

I purchased a Domain Name through Google Domains, and have configured the domain to use Custom AWS Name Servers.

This works great, and traffic is being routed properly to AWS Route 53, but I would like to understand what is happening during this request before hitting the Name Servers.

Does a request first hit Google Domain (since I purchased the domain through them), then is forwarded to the AWS Name Servers, or is a request not routed to Google Domains at all and goes straight to the Name Servers as this is configured in the DNS?
