Approaches to investigate new networks

Hi there!

I've been working as a duty junior network engineer in a datacenter for about 1.5 year, but still not sure that I fully understand how our network actually works. So I'm wondering what is the best approach to learn how any enterprise/DC/ISP network works when you see it for the first time or as in my case observe some new unexpected things almost every shift.
