"Sizing" switches- what metrics should be viewed to determine what you need?

As I'm diving into more networking knowledge- one thing that I'm a little unclear on is sizing a Layer 3 Switch.

For servers you can use a general metric on disk speed, cores/clock speed, RAM, etc.

What stats/metrics should be looked at in determining what Layer 3 Switch is needed for your environment?
