Is the first edition of 'TCP/IP Illustrated, Vol. 1: The Protocols' by Richard Stevens still worth reading?

I've read in several places, including here, that the first edition is a masterpiece while the second edition has been completely re-written to the point that it is unrecognisable. So is the first edition still worth reading over the second edition? My main concern is that it is so old that I'll be reading incorrect information.

If the first edition is too old and the second edition is badly written, then what book would you recommend for learning about networking that is easy to read and up to date? If it helps, my background is in software development and I have a little networking knowledge, but I'd like to fully understand what happens when I'm sending information across networks and the security implications.
