Use of network management software like Cisco Prime Infrastructure/Solarwinds

Hi,

I'm brand new here and a complete and utter newbie (1st year student), so apologies if this is the wrong place.

I'm working on some scripts for a solution that requires me to collect usage data of different access points deployed in an enterprise setting (e.g. number of active users/devices, type of devices, upload/download size, AP building/floor groups, etc.) Just as a proof of concept, I've used the Cisco Prime Infrastructure API to make a prototype, however it seems CPI is only compatible with a entirely Cisco network and thus I presume it is pretty uncommonly used in industry. I've also found a competitor called Solarwinds (though they dont seem to offer an API).

My question to you all is this: In an enterprise context, what is the most common way to manage your network? Is there some basic technology (e.g. Windows server or linux command line or something) that my hours of google searching aren't revealing?

A secondary question for the off chance someone is willing to answer more directly; how should I go about making a script that is compatible with the millions of configurations out there?

If anyone has any input it would be super appreciated ! :)
