Will a LAN port drop WAN traffic?

Hi all,

I did some Googling and couldn't find the answer to this question. Was hoping this sub would be able to help me.

If someone were to connect a WAN port from a router or modem to the LAN port of a switch or home router/ap, would the LAN port drop all WAN traffic, effectively protecting the internal network? Was curious if connecting a WAN port to a LAN port by mistake would expose the devices on the internal LAN to the Internet. I suspect that's not the case, but couldn't seem to find an answer to that question.

I would appreciate any education/clarification on this. Thanks!

EDIT: made some minor changes for clarification
