I could really use some university advice for a long term networking career.

Hello everyone and thank you for any tips you can give me. I'm 37 years old, and though my entire adult life has revolved around tech I have not truly devoted myself to a disciple. I love networking and have decided to do whatever is necessary to have a fruitful career in networking. I understand that I need a BS education, high level certs, and experience to give myself the best chance of landing interviews for the good jobs down the road.

Here's my question. I am very close to enrolling in WGU networking operations and security (I have met all criteria, and would be enrolled on the 15th). However I read that this is not the best path for a strictly networking career do to the majority of the WGU certifications being pointless in a networking job. Also I read that the security certs can be difficult when your goal is routing and switching due to multi-discipline studying which also locks you out of getting your degree until you pass all certs. Because of my age I want to spend the least amount of time possible in school while still getting a respected degree (no degree mills). I have no problem doing the certs on the side.

Are there any WGU network operation and security grads or current students that can give me their input? Also does anyone have any other ideas for the best online school route to take that is both quick and respected? I understand I will be in the program for years.

From what I understand the degree itself is not so important, but that you have the degree to get in the door. If you have the degree (any IT based BS), certs, and experience that is really what you need. Am I correct?

I just want to waste as little time as possible to reach my goals. Thanks.
