(x-post networking) How do IP geo-locators query their information?

Hey guys,

Sites such as https://www.ip2location.com/ gives quite extensive information on location of ISP, coordinates of this server region and even elevation.

How do these services work? I performed a whois on a few IP's in my server connection logs and cannot find the information there. I tried also using my open public IP and again, none of the information matched with what was on https://www.ip2location.com/

So I'm just curious into how this all works, there's quite a few sites like this!
