Network Design for VPLS Configuration

I am looking for some advice for network design and customer hardware. I have 5 sites that will be inter-connected with VPLS, 3 of the 5 sites have dual VPLS hand-offs (path diversity), and the remaining 2 of the 5 sites have one VPLS and a DIA Drain handoff. They were on-net for the service provider, to that end there was already path diversity built in at those two locations, further its the reason why their are DIA drains at these locations. One site will be primary, but the hand-off will remain the same... it will be behind a pair of HA firewalls. All sites with dual VPLS hand-offs should be setup to load balance among the circuits. I have considered a number of different designs, with a router at every site vs. a single router for all sites. I don't know if I can do VLANs across the VPLS circuit... I don't have any experience with VPLS network design. Any suggestions on how to go about putting this together?
