I'm currently investigating some very intermittent packet loss on a WAN site to site connection, and would love to figure out where the drops occur, and perhaps just a clearer picture of exactly what happens.
For the most time it is not a problem, file transfers experiences ~10 seconds of zero transfer speed or even disconnects the service. When I run Apache Guacamole sessions, they also seem to be very unstable and disconnect after a while, or lag-freeze for 5 seconds.
SSH connections seem to survive, so it might just be bad latency for a brief moment.
I have tried running pings for 24 hours with 0 dropped packets, so the connection isn't necessarily all that bad, and the culprit may be a virtual Sophos UTM instance on the remote site.
I have looked at using Cacti that uses RRDTool which gives exactly the types of graphs that I imagine that I want, but to my shame I have given up trying to configure it - even the appliance disk image seems like one of those incredibly powerful, but useless if the learning curve is too steep tools out there.
Is there a good alternative out there? I would prefer Linux based tools, but I'm willing to try anything at this point.
