Why is NFV becoming popular now?

I'm curious what changed that made NFV suddenly a popular prospect.

Is it a cost efficiency thing? Presumably the rise of cloud computing brought down the cost of commodity servers but did that do enough to make it feasible?

Is it just a result of faster computers?

Virtualisation improvements?

Is it all just hype?

Edit: So it's clear I don't believe NFV is all just hype. Just wondering why it seems things are kicking off now when the principle behind the technology has been around for years.
