Thinking about running Ethernet through my crawl space. Should I be concerned about mice chewing on the cables?

Kind of a stupid question, but I have no experience with cabling. My house is extremely old. I’m talking over a hundred years old. Our crawl space is extremely tiny and the only access to it is from the outside through an opening. The only thing blocking that opening is a piece of wood that leans up against it. Needless to say, that piece of wood doesn’t do shit to keep our animals. We had a cat living under there at one point.

In any case, I want to run Ethernet throughout my house. Can’t do the attic as it doesn’t span over the entire house. That leaves me with the crawl space. I don’t want to go down there to begin with, so I would be pissed if I had to go down there and rerun cables that have been destroyed by mice and rats and other rodents. So I have two questions:

  1. Do I actually have to worry about rodents chewing the wires?
  2. If so, what can I do to prevent it? ie is there a sleeve I can put over the wires that would prevent chewing? Keep in mind that the material would have to be cheap as I’m running many wires over a big distance.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I’m young and have no experience with this sort of thing.
