Fileshares extremely slow

Does anyone have any guidance to figuring out the root cause of extremely slow file transfers?

My office has a 100Mbps link to our data-centre, I've been tearing my hair out trying to work out why it performs poorly when doing pretty much anything.

One particular very slow performer is SMB fileshares. Over the link I'm seeing speeds between 10kbps and 300kbps. Local LAN file-share speeds are fine at both the office location and the data-centre.

Currently I'm copying 1.5Gb of data and Windows is estimating 2 days to complete the transfer. It doesn't seem to matter whether I push or pull the data.

If I monitor the link I'm seeing an average utilisation of about 20Mbps.

Initially thoughts were that the issue might be micro-bursts of traffic, thanks to help from people on this forum as the office is on the end of a P2P link before hitting the WAN link to the data-centre, Our local switch is a 3560G but the P2P is only 100Mbps. i've now put in line a 2921 to route the traffic over the P2P, however this seems to have made little difference.

I feel that in my naivety I'm missing something obvious, but I feel I'm going around in circles now and getting no-where, and and all help is very much appreciated.
