Fixed Port Switches for Core

I'm looking at replacing core network switches and have noticed multiple vendors offering fixed port switches for the core. Perhaps this is nothing new, but I'm just now noticing it. The only cores I've built were made up of chassis switches, for the expandability and flexibility of port options. Moving to fixed port switches can save a lot of money in comparison to a chassis, but I worry about flexibility in the future if additional capacity is needed. Even right now, I have a need to connect a few 10g with many 40g interfaces in the core, which makes this somewhat difficult in a fixed port switch. I'm now stuck in AP mode, trying to figure out if chassis are worth the investment anymore and if I'm worried about fixed port switches for no reason.

I know this question is going to be dependent on size of the campus, current port requirements, and other variables, but what are your thoughts on deploying fixed port switches in the core?
