Detect network problems production plant

Hello,

We are a software company where I do some SysAdmin work from time to time. We have a client in manufacturing without a dedicated IT team. Our software works client/server based and runs on the VMware infrastructure of the client.

Their production network is one big VLAN with all the equipment interconnected via Siemens switches. Since a recent extension of their plan (some extra switches) they now have some outages which last some seconds from time to time. Our software visualizes their production process so these images freeze approx 4/5 seconds and than it's correct again. For me, this looks like something (software?) locks the PLC and as a result the visualization delays with a few seconds.

I'm now tasked with the job to find what causes this delay. My first idea was to install some monitoring PC in the network which collects all the Switches SNMP data. I already looked in the log of these Scalance switches but couldn't really find anything useful. I can't really use WireShark since I don't have any place to connect onto the network. All Switches are fully connected with no free ports.

As a say, I've never done something before so it's possible I'm missing some important steps in the troubleshooting process.
