Best practices when designing new IP address scheme?

I'm looking for advice on how to best come up with an IP addressing scheme for a largish network (2000+ nodes). This is going to be on a class A subnet.

Also, any suggestions on VLAN numbering that makes sense? Firewall object naming that's easy to understand?

I'm hoping there's a standard out there that I can follow.
