For a research project we're running a 144 strand fiber bundle (G.652.D, single mode). Although we're not going to be using all the fibers just yet, we'll be doing about fifty splices soon, and more in the future. Renting a splicer isn't that expensive, but it is a bit inconvenient as we are in the middle of nowhere, and makes it difficult to do things at a short notice.
So I'm very tempted to get one of the cheap-ish new splicers that you can find on Ebay, like the A-81s, which is well under €1000 including tools, box, shipping and taxes.
Does anyone have experience with these for low-volume splicing? Recommendations?
