Background: I have no issue that needs to be solved just trying to expand my knowledge.
I was just reading a software manual. in there was a configuration step with the example:
<sendToAddress>DEN.RED.60.169</sendToAddress> in lots of software I have seen where you can put either a hostname or a numeric IP address but I have never seen the above where some of the octaves are in characters.
is this a standard capability in IP protocol?
how does this work with DNS/domain controllers?
