Opensource / inexpensive loadbalancer?

Anyone have a good load balancer they like that can do real server alerting?

Our needs are very simple, L4 a small handful of services (10 services with about 30 backend servers total), ~1000 open sessions and ~10-100 conns/sec. SSL offload would be nice but not required, and a few hundred megabit (gig would be nice), run on prem (VMWare)

We're currently using an out of support KEMP VLM and they want $4k for a new one.

HAProxy/nginx were my go-to's but it looks like you need awful hacks or to pay for the enterprise versions to get alerting.

Anyone have something else they like? I'm running a demo of HAProxy ALOHA and it seems fine, no idea on pricing though. We'll spend the money if needed but the KEMP tax is steep for such a simple setup.

Edit: Doesn't have to be opensource, but cheaper than kemp would be nice.
