How to keep knowledge?

Hello

I've rephrased this post many times - each time they turned into a boring summary of my situation, so I've decided to simplify the explanation.

• I was once good overall at networking (when taking my degree)
• Now, only a part of the subjects are relevant to my job
• I have two kids and a house to maintain

How do you stay up to date, while not losing the knowledge you already have acquired? How much of your time off (if any) do you use to stay relevant and refreshing topics?

I'm unsure if I should be requesting my employer for time to do these things?
