Hi everyone,
For a small office (5-10 employees) I have the option of deploying either a C1111X-8P or an EdgeRouter 4 to serve an 1Gbit/s fiber line. Now, I have installed EdgeRouters in other settings (non-critical) and have had no issues. However, I am not that familiar with the cisco line-up to make the judgement call here. Some things to consider:
- Needs are mostly basic L3 routing (no GRE, BGP etc.) and VLANs.
- VPN is not necessary right now, but might become important in the future (with me wondering if the EdgeRouter 4 could handle multiple users).
- Some extra security on the network edge would be nice. The EdgeRouter supports basic stateful firewalling. For the Cisco router I could purchase a SEC license, which I gather would allow for zone based firewalling and IPSec (potentially also snort IPS, though that is mentioned nowhere in detail)?
- The router is not in a mission-critical environment. Failing would be bad, but it does not need to be replaced in 4h or so.
With these thoughts, what router would you prefer?
Thanks for any suggestions,
Peter
