Network Upgrade Suggestions

Hello All

My company is looking to upgrade our networking over the next few years, and I wanted some input on 10 Gbit networking to workstations and possible fiber in the Server room. As of right now we have 1 Gbit copper going everywhere. What I had though about was to have 10 Gbit copper to workstation on the production floor and then have fiber once it got to the server room. Is it even wroth the trouble in the server room? We have a mix of systems with some having built in 10 Gbit copper and others just 1 Gbit copper. Nothing has fiber connections on it, my thinking was if we had filer in the server room, it would cut down on the cable spaghetti on the back of the racks? Our firewall has 10 Gbit copper connections and we could order a fiber if needed and the current switches only have fiber uplinks.

We produce about 20 times more internal data then we send out, so far, we haven’t had any major problems, but the company is looking at new contracts that a faster network would benefit from. The other option is intermediate speeds like 2.5 Gbit and 5 Gbit over copper. Would they be a good option to look at instead of 10 Gbit everywhere? We are thinking along the lines of bite the bullet now and not have to worry about having parts of the network running at different speeds.
