Router vs Firewall

No stupid question sunday right? What is a router? I know the next book definition but i've never had a dedicated router before and not sure when I would.

I know just enough networking to be dangerous. Took night classes in HS but never even graduate my two year degree program. I've scaled and support some pretty large networks, but Meraki made it so easy it felt like cheating. Now that i'm in the fortigate stack the pane of glass Meraki put between me and the inter-workings of networks has been removed. One piece I've never had a good grasp on is when would I actually need one of those big 'cisco routers' I see?

Both Meraki and Fortigate have always called it a security appliance -- kind of a neat all in one from what I gather...but I see people talking about using fortigate as just a firewall and something else handling the routing. Is it just as simple as resources vs request load type of situation where on small deployments like mine <500 clients I can get away with these all in one boxes but as I start to scale to REAL enterprise deployments that not only for proper redundancy , and too offload the function to keep them seperate?
