I'm reading about QoS and dscp values and I'm tying to understand how this all works. I understand (I think) the existence of the TOS field and that there are several different combinations of class/drop probability values and Expedited Forwarding which I believe is a separate type of classification from the Assured Forwarded values.
I also understand that you can create class-maps to match packets with certain dscp values and then policy-maps to choose what to do with them (please correct me if I'm wrong).
My main question is how to packets get these values in the first place? I've done some packet captures, specifically made a test IP call (using the RingCentral software phone) and all of the call packets just had a 0 default dscp value. Is this something that would have to be set in the VOIP software somewhere?
