Does anyone have any links to some information, on the in-depth specifications of IOS 14 Private MAC address feature.
Apples own information seems fairly vague: Here
I have seen some reports saying that the MAC will stay the same for the same SSID, even when roaming between physical AP’s. by contrast I have seen some reports stating that it is linked to the BSSID, meaning your MAC could change whilst roaming.
Further reports indicate even given all the above, the MAC address can randomly change whenever it wants to.
I realise this can be turned off, but as a provider of VBN’s (Guest WiFi) in hospitality, I am interested in the effects of iOS 14 Private Address feature on networks with MAC based authentication, and timeouts. Frankly asking people to turn of a built-in security feature for a public network isn’t going to fly.
So far, it doesn’t seem to have caused any major outages, but it is likely guests are being signed out when their MAC changes. This is likely resulting in HTTPS redirect errors depending on what they are doing at the time.
I feel a bit like this is the calm before the storm. I expect the iOS 14 adoption rate to be sky high given the supported devices.
Does anyone have any links to further information, or any experience with Private address issues, and mitigating them?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
