From Wikipedia article Type of service:
Prior to the redefinition, the ToS field could specify a datagram's priority and request a route for low-delay, high-throughput, or highly-reliable service. (...) In practice, the ToS field never saw widespread use outside of US Department of Defense networks.
Why did people ignore this header, as the Wikipedia article claims?
It would seem to me that this header could be very useful. For example, games like LoL would likely want to minimize latency as much much as possible, so would likely want to request low-delay routes for their packets. Downloading files from the internet would rather want reliability - it sucks to have to redownload a several gigabyte file because the download got interrupted. Video streaming services would likely want high-throughput routes.
Why did such services not find this header useful? Why was the functionality provided by this header largely ignored?
What am I missing?
