LoadBalancer - Hardware vs Software

I'm having a dispute for what to use to load balance.

I see companies like Zevenet (Core I5, 4GB Ram) or LoadBalancer.org (Quad Core Xeon, 8GB RAM) that sells hardware at minimum prices of $3000 and that can increase to $12000 a device for load balancing.

Therefore, they sell license to use the software in a own server. Is there a advantage in get the hardware?

It is a good idea to have a dedicated $300 dell server? With even better hardware capabilities than the hardware they sell.

I can even consider HAProxy.
