Ferrite choke on cat5/network cables - has anyone ever seen this or used them?

I was talking to someone and they asked me if my network cables had a ferrite choke on one end, basically like many USB cables have where the wire goes through the core, loops around and back through then one to the end/termination. I've never seen this in 25+ years working with and installing cat5/6 but this guy said it was "very common". I was kind of lost as to the reason it would ever be needed unless maybe it was getting POE as I think one of the reasons for the choke on USB cables is that it plugs into a device that is connected to an outlet (like a printer powered by 120v) - though I think I often do see them on devices like camera cables that have a transformer powering the charging station.

SO I was just wondering if anyone has ever seen these on their cat5 cables and if they are actually common. If you have seen them, why are they there and do they make any noticeable difference? I have some extra chokes laying around that I could try b/c my speeds aren't exactly what I would like them to be, so maybe there is noise in the line from some device?
