Would anyone be willing to explain when the proper time to use CS-vlan Id preservation?

I am trying to learn the carrier side of networking and have some customers where we provide transport services where we hand them a vlan. We want the vlan to be consistent through the network. Would this be an appropriate scenario? What else would be appropriate? I was told as a rule to keep it disabled.
