Turning on my laptop temporarily kills the internet connection?

I recently upgraded my office network and installed a pfSense firewall and Ubiquiti wifi and switches and overall, everything is working great BUT whenever I turn on my laptop, the internet connection dies for a few minutes!

Laptop is a Dell XPS 15 9750 and its connected trough a Dell WD19 dock and the ethernet connection to my network. My internet connection is with Virgin Media Business (in the UK) and I'm using thier Hitron router behind my firewall.

I know this is the cause of my outages as I've worked it out through the process of elimination.

The symptoms of the outage is:

  • Loss of internet connectivity - can't ping via IP or DNS to anywhere in the WAN including my modem
  • I can ping interal LAN and firewall
  • After a few minutes, some connectivity comes back but with ping times in the 1000s
  • A few minutes after, all goes back to normal

The only thing I can see in the logs for the modem or firewall is that there was a loss of packets between the 2 devices but I can't see a reason why.

I don't even know where to start with diagnosing this isssue - does anyone have any ideas?
