Problems Connecting WLC 5500 to LAN

Please helps guys.

I have a WLC 5500, a L2 Cisco Switch and my internet modem. I want to do a minilab and be able to be in the same subnet of the LAN that my modem assigns which is 192.168.15.0/24.

Problem is this. If I put a static Ip of 192.168.15.1 to my laptop and connect directly to the SPF distribution port1 of the WLC that has a management IP address of 192.168.15.20 I am able to access the GUI and ping the WLC.

If I put a switch between the WLC and my Laptop, the WLC and switch ports doesn't turn on. I tried both, trunk and access ports. I am using an ethernet cable for this.

Maybe I am messing up with the logical interfaces. I want all devices running on same subnet of 192.158.15.0, no vlans.

What am I doing wrong?
