Hi /r/networking, I have an odd issue.
I have a FTTC broadband line in to my property. Historically this has worked fine up until my ISP billing system screwed up and closed my account and I had to start a new one.
The line in is a standard FTTC connection, historically I have 60-70mb down and 20mb up. Kit in use use is a Draytek Vigor130 in bridge to a Watchguard T35. No additional setup required my end for a dynamic or static IP it just pulls in at negotiation.
When the new account started I had a dynamic IP address, after a couple of days I had the static applied. As soon as I restarted my kit to pull in the static my down speed dropped to 6-7mb. I left it a while to see if stabilised, it did not. So I called the ISP to troubleshoot, there first reaction was to send an engineer out, I disagreed as I could see my DSL stats were fine, there tests said everything was fine. So I asked them to remove the static as I knew the issue started when that was applied. Static removed, router restarted everything normal. Now I have been jumping through hoops with them for about a month now, every time I get a static speeds drop, and that is with different statics and gateways. As soon as it is turned back to dynamic it's is fine.
My last conversation has them saying they want to send an engineer again, which I feel is going to be fruitless.
Thing I have tried my end to resolve include, using different routers including ISP supplied ones, tweaking MTU settings, had only one device connected to router via wireless and wired, tried direct internet connection through the Vigor130. Nothing seems to change.
I don't know much about networking outside of a LAN environment, but my with limited knowledge and the evidence at hand I point the issue to be with in the ISP network. Does anyone know when I can recommend for them to check?
