Converting a Cisco 3500 into a dumb switch

What is it about plugging in an unconfigured Cisco 3500 48 port switch that is seen differently than a dumb 8 port switch? If I plug the 3500 into the network it triggers an STP safeguard and shuts down the network port, while the dumb 8 port can simply split the connection eight ways. Wouldn't both switches basically be doing the same thing?
