Long time lurker, first post. I reviewed the sub rules and wiki topics, so I believe this topic fits. If I am wrong, I apologize.
As the title says, we're in the market for a new edge hardware. We are a small regional ISP that has grown significantly over the past 4 years. Our current hardware is not something I'd ever purchase again, Catalyst 6807-xl with dual SUP-6T-XL. This platform has worked ok, considering it is a layer 3 switch, but we are seeing its limitations and weird software bugs now. That, and I am losing sleep over the fact we don't have dual units. Smart net isn't enough insurance for me.
We are primarily a Cisco shop today, however we have some Arista switches in the network. We have been very happy with the Arista hardware. However, in the past when meeting with Arista it was clear that they didn't want to touch large scale routing. It seems that position has changed with the "R" line of gear.
What is the communities view of going 7280R or 7504R for full route tables, approximately 50 Gbps throughput between transit and peering. Need the ability to do 100G interfaces. No DWDM required, that is handled on different platforms. BGP is the big one here, MPLS is currently offloaded to ASR900 boxes. IGP is OSPF today. Can the 7280R reliably offer redundancy with two units?
We have contacted Arista several times, no answer back. Our old rep is no longer with the company.
For what it is worth, we also have some Juniper experience, but found Arista was easier to grasp coming from Cisco. Not interested in routerboard/pfsense/ubiquity type solutions. Sorry, just too much money on the line. Also investigating ASR9006, but don't care for the VRF licensing restrictions and crazy line card costs.
What would you do?
