I set up a proxmox box with a pfsense VM which should act as my gateway/firewall/router. I know that bare metal pfsense is usually the way to go but I want to experiment with it virtualized.
Everything works so far after some troubleshooting. The only issue is that I don't have a good way to automatically obtain an IP address for my proxmox host when I have to reboot it. Since the host should get its IP from the DHCP server in the pfsense VM I cannot have auto DHCP during boot, because then the pfsense VM is not up yet. What would be a good solution? My current plan is to configure a relatively small timeout in the dhclient of the host with a retry time of maybe 90 seconds (or how long it takes for the pfsense VM to automatically boot).
Would that be a good solution? I'm not sure whether the timeout/retry setting will work. Will the host continue to boot after the timeout and the retry triggers 90s after the boot process finished? Or is there a more reliable way?
