Are you hard or soft on Networking noobs?

Currently we have a few Engineers who are extremely good and a few who are also average. The great Engineers are more on the terse/direct side where the average ones are on the very helpful side. For helping newbies what's better... sparking the fear in them to do their research before coming to you or having a very open door policy where they can ask everything and anything no matter how silly?

I feel there are some benefits to both sides, mangers in the team definitely prefer a very soft kumbaya hand holding environment but I'm not sure this will lead to the best Engineers.

How does /r/networking deal with this?
