What is progression like in the networking field? (UK)

I have read a couple articles online that suggest that there are multiple, several different positions in networking..And I understand that provided u have the right certification you get the job..

So I'm just curious as how someone who started at a help desk or 1st line support would make their way up to a more challenging, a more important/prioritised job..

I am currently in 1st year of uni and I am not sure if networking is for me or not. The only real concern for me is progression. So far what I've studied in uni in networking, I have enjoyed so I was wondering as a career is it good?

So I suppose I have 4 questions: 1 - What is progression like/how long would it take to move up from a 1st line support/help desk position?
2 - How likely is it that you could move up to a management position in networking?
3 - Do you regret choosing networking industry?
4 - Do you ever find that you're not busy? Do you still get paid for the period when you're not busy as in when you don't have anything to do?
