Split DNS for internal clients

Hi all,

I'm setting up a webserver and need internal clients to resolve the internal address and external clients to resolve the external address. (All IP addresses and DNS names in this post have been changed to protect the innocent!)

The external DNS is handled by a 3rd party and we have an A record of - example.external.com - 10.163.161.222 and the external.com domain is in our list of forwarders.

The internal DNS has an A record of example.internal.local - 192.168.4.223 -- this is the address I need example.external.com to resolve to for internal clients.

Google-fu has brought me to the topic of split brain DNS but I can't find an example for when the external domain is handled by a 3rd party. My DNS servers are Windows.

Has anyone done this, and can you advise? Blog posts and real life examples to follow would be ideal.

Thanks in advance.
