Mikrotik Hex S vs EdgeRouter X (w/ OpenWrt)

Hello,

I am looking for a budget router able to handle a symmetric 1gbps pppoe internet connection. Not intending to use QoS or OpenVPN by now.

I narrowed down my search to the following:

1. Mikrotik Hex S: I am somewhat afraid of the steep learning curve. Still eager to learn, though.
2. Edgerouter X with OpenWrt: stock EdgeOS does not seem to support 2Gbps cpu bandwidth, hence I was thinking of flashing OpenWrt on it (link). However, I wonder if OpenWrt would run stable in this router.

Do you have any thoughts/recommendations on which router should I choose?
