Campus network design best practices with L3 switches

I took a look at Cisco's campus network design at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Campus/HA_campus_DG/hacampusdg.html and, as shown in figure 3, they recommended that the link between the access and distribution layer be on layer 2. However, is this changed if you use layer 3 switches on the access layer? Wouldn't it be better to just do as much routing as possible on the access layer to best use resources? I'm assuming they said to keep it on layer 2 since they're using layer 2 switches in the example, but I'm not 100% sure. Sorry if it's a silly question, I only have my CCENT and I'm still very new!
