We are running Solarwinds UDT which provides an avg number of ports used over time but that doesn't help when we have laptops or other devices that are constantly in and out of the office, sometimes for long periods of time.
What I am wondering is how you manage or report on the number of available switch ports that are currently used or assigned to user's desks, conference rooms etc, so that you can determine if another switch is needed due to incoming growth. Or maybe a report that shows total number of ports used in the last 30 days on a switch.
Also, do you keep stock on hand in case of growth? Right now I keep running into the situation where we find out a new team is coming in (could be a few users or 50 users etc) and we have to order a new switch or 2 to accommodate (even though we have enough ports to cover the current amount of desks). Sometimes the issue is that the client requires 2 computers connected to the LAN...some teams do, some don't.
