Hard copy vs. e-reader for consuming technical material

So far I've done almost all my technical learning on hard copy dead-tree media. Something about the tactile physical experience is more immersive and less distracting than trying to scroll a PDF on my monitor. Also makes note-taking / highlighting easier.

But this means I end up with piles of books and printouts, and I prefer not to print out the 1000+ page Aruba User Guide if I can just dump it on an e-reader and get 99% of the same experience.

How do you prefer to consume technical material?

What is your experience using e-readers for technical stuff? Any specific model recommendations?
