SysAdmin trying to understand Infoblox and Split-DNS

Sysadmin here in the process of upgrading Exchange 2010 to 2016. Prior to my current environment my experience with DNS has been Active Directory Integrated DNS. However in my current environment they migrated from that to Infoblox to handle all DNS which is now managed by our Network Team.

I'm having an issue understanding how Infoblox handles things, specifically split dns. Actually when I try to research this split dns seems to be a foreign term with Infoblox. Everything seems to be based on views which for now is a term I'm having trouble understanding.

We have two views, Internal and External. Let's call our primary SMTP domain extdomain.com. Right now there's only a zone for it in the External view. My wish was to have a DNS zone on the Internal view, a split dns that I've used in the past. That way I can easily resolve things like mail.extdomain.com and autodiscover.extdomain.com. Per our network team we can't have this zone on the Internal view, and I'm just trying to understand why. In my opinion it doesn't make sense to have this on the external side, but I'm not sure I understand this enough so I'm just trying to wrap my head around Infoblox.
