I have some serious questions about why IPV6 adoption isn’t more widespread, especially in the cloud. For example AWS, “You cannot disable IPv4 support for your VPC and subnets; this is the default IP addressing system for Amazon VPC and Amazon EC2.” And another example of this is VPC peering, you cannot create a VPC peering if your IPV4 subnets collide, even if you want to only use IPV6. There seems to be a large breakdown in what is supported. I thought that IPV6 adoption in the cloud would be super high because the “cloud” would be all new infrastructure, but it seems this isn’t the case.
Here is a link about the state of IPV6 adoption and it doesn’t seem promising. Given that we have run out of IPV4 addresses and that IPV6 is almost limitless for our current needs.
I get that IPV6 isn’t very human friendly, but we have tons of tooling to calculate subnets and address spaces. I feel like there must be some other reason. Let me know if this is the wrong subreddit to ask this question. Thank you.
