How can I determine if the bottleneck for internet speed is physical distance/barriers or local router/switch transmission rate?

I consider(ed) myself to be decently well-versed in networks until I realized I don't know the answer to this very basic question, and I was never actually taught this in a networks class (but oh boy did we study OSPF and BGP). How can you determine if slower speeds (especially when writing programs that are bottlenecked by slow http responses) are caused by factors such as physical media blocking the frequency transmission/weakened signal due to distance or actually the router's switching/transmission capacity?
