Server Room Layout(Airflow considerations)

I'm reviewing the proposed Server room layout of a small campus we are setting up.

currently there are 4 x 42U racks lined up side by side (no separation)

- Air condition/Fans blowing cool air into the front of the racks

- Extraction/hot air located on the back wall behind the racks.

Which was fine for my needs, however just looking through the BOM for the network gear .. all the Switches are 'side to side' airflow.

My thoughts are:

  1. move the racks away from each other ( not sure how much separation)
  2. remove side panels of racks
  3. offset racks so they are not all horizontally lined up ( could this cause exhaust of one rack to go into intake of the adjacent rack

on the other hand I think, I may be worried about nothing considering

1.only the switches are side to side, the servers, Routers, Firewalls are all front to back

  1. I have a fairly decent HVAC budget, and I can add bigger more powerful units ( I haven't looked at this yet)

any feedback based on your experience , am i missing something obvious ?
