I've noticed at one of our sites a large amount of packet drops on the WAN interface. From digging into it, the drops don't look like they're due to collisions / duplex mismatches etc, I think the drops are due to the fact that the local network is 1gbps but the wan link is only 100mbps and the 3560 has very small interface buffers.
I've saturated the WAN link with our network and the output drops rocket up according to sh int
Increasing the wan speed isn't an option, so are there any other mitigation strategies I can implement that would limit the drops?
It's a pretty data heavy site so the drops are notable in the performance of the link
Would a QoS traffic shaper be appropriate in this instance, or should I be policing and letting the TCP traffic wind down to reduce the hit?
Appreciate any input or advice
Cheers
Rich
