Alternative to networking laptops without Homegroup?

Occasionally for my job I create a mini-network for laptops so that one main laptop can instantly share a folder containing powerpoints and videos. To do this I hardline all laptops to a network switch, give them static IPs, and create a Homegroup. I recently found out though that Windows has axed Homegroup, probably as a ploy to force people to use OneDrive. Using a cloud service wouldn't work for me since I rely on the gigabit speeds to instantly push out any updates made to the files within the shared folder.

Is there any good and relatively simple alternative to using Homegroup? I've done some quick googling but the only other option I'm seeing is to use File Explorer's Sharing protocol, but I can't seem to get it to work with my configuration.
