We currently have two edge routers for redundancy. These two routers handle our internet transit as well as private WAN access to a VPLS type service. With the internet transit we have one transit going to each router so if a router fails, we at least have one transit and router left.
The issue is with our other private connections that we do not have the budget to get multiple connections (although I'm pushing for that). Instead of terminating that connection directly on one router, I thought of installing an edge switch instead, plugging both routers and the VPLS service into the switch, and then letting both routers access the circuit simultaneously.
Of course this just moves the single point of failure from the router to the switch and is not a substitute for redundant uplinks to our carrier.
My question is, does this type of design warrant the use of an edge switch? What types of features should be considered for an edge switch (buffers, protocols, physical properties, etc)
As far as pros and cons go:
Pros:
- Allows both routers to be active on the VPLS
- Ability to do firmware upgrades on routers without impacting the private WAN
Cons:
- Still single point of failure
I have no other colleagues to discuss this with so I appreciate any insight and recommendations you could give.
